Elizabeth, that note about the importance of history was directed at the
general readership of Wire, not you. That was a joke about the term
paper! It made me think of all that research, etc, etc, even the typing!
(ouch!) That paper was on the development of Northern Ireland as a
political entity, so any time I read a discussion of the history or
political matters of that region I get flashbacks and think "oh, no,
don't put me through that paper again!" No, I haven't been reading
anyone like Conor Cruise O'Brien. But these bombings and killings really
bother me. I don't think they're going to accomplish anything. I'd hate
to have that sort of thing going on in my back yard, and losing loved
ones and friends. Since I'm from the States I don't have to deal with
this. It's got to be unbelievably hellish to have to deal with it, to
not having a choice. I can't stand what the English did to Ireland but I
don't think bombings and killings are the answer. I read Steve's note,
and I have to empathize with him. If you want the Northern Irish to have
self-determination, and I do, well, let them decide the destiny of their
land.

Pax,
Patricia
