New meaning of New Year's Day

Its strange how a song can change meanings suddenly when something happens in
your life. "New Years Day" to me was just an interesting song that I waited
for the radio station to play at midnight every year. Its a nice song but I
never went searching very deep into the lyrics. When I woke up on New Years
day 1999 it was to very grave news. A friend of mine was coming home from a
ski trip with two of his friends. On the way home they came upon an accident
scene, a head-on collision. Being the nice, helpful guys they were, they
stopped to help. One of the accident victims had a cell phone so two of the
guys were trying to call for help as the third one moved his car out of the
way. As they were calling for help the two boys were hit by another car. My
friend died and the other boy was sent to the hospital with a possible
ruptured spleen. As I listened to "New Years Day" today the lyrics took on
a meaning that I was unprepared for, but was soothed by. It became a song of
mourning, missing, moving on, and meeting again in heaven. I know that
whenever I hear this song in the future I will remember my friend and the
sacrifice he made trying to help someone else.

All is quiet on New Years Day,
A world in white gets underway,
And I want to be with you,
Be with you night and day,
Nothing changes on New Years Day.
I will be with you again.
I will be with you again.

Under a blood-red sky
A crowd has gathered in black and white.
Arms entwined, the chosen few,
Newspapers say, it says its true.
And we can break through,
Though torn in two we can be one.
I will begin again, I will begin again.
Oh and maybe the time is right,
Oh maybe tonight.
I will be with you again.
I will be with you again.

And so we are told this is the golden age
And gold is the reason for the wars we wage.
Though I want to be with you,
To be with you night and day.
Nothing changes on New Years day.

This might not be of interest to anyone else, but it was important for me to
get this off my chest.
