U2 was at The Ritz in New York...I'm sure of that...Yeah,
December 6, 1980...The SECOND show was at the Bayou
Club in Washington on the 7th of December. U2 also opened
the third leg of the"Boy" tour in the Bayou Club...)

>From CNN:

Bye-bye Bayou: Legendary club closes doors after Eve show

Web posted on:Friday, January 01, 1999 9:29:07 AM EST

>From Correspondent Gina London

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Where did U2 make its American debut?
Where did legendary rocker Jimi Hendrix wail? Where did Mick
Jagger and Billy Joel jam? It all happened at a tiny place called
The Bayou in Washington, D.C. .

The nationally renowned club has been a venue for big-name
artists for almost 50 years. "It should hold a place in the Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame," says Bayou manager Mark Milikan.

Especially now. The Bayou has closed its doors forever, doomed
to the wrecking ball of progress. The last show was Thursday night,
New Year's Eve.

Storied establishment

One attraction of The Bayou over the years, for both fans and bands,
was the size of the place, a small hole-in-the-wall that reverberated
with a friendly vibe.

"(Fans) feel everything, every pound of a drum, and see the sweat
pouring off the musicians," Bayou owner John Boyle said of the club
shortly before it met its demise.

The Bayou has a history, too. In the 1930s, before the bands took the
stage, it was called the Hideaway Club -- long rumored to be a
hangout for the mob.

"When it was the Hideaway Club, I believe there was a mob hit and
I believe this was before it was called the Bayou, and we actually
have a ghost in the club named George," Milikan said.

'It's time to change'

So why would anyone want to end the fun of The Bayou? It was purely
about business: Boyle says its lease was bought out by a commercial
developer. The Bayou will be razed, and developers plan to replace it
with upscale apartments, a luxury hotel and stores.

It's the end of an era for generations of patrons, many of whom came
back year after year to celebrate anniversaries that wouldn't have
existed save for a little inspirational music.

"A lot of people met (here) -- staff and customers, their boyfriends,
girlfriends, wives, husbands, whatever," says bartender Anne Koza.
"Personally, it's going to be very sad but I guess it's time to change."

But before that change happened, there was one last encore. The
band Everything, which has a hit song in the movie "The Waterboy,"
had the honor of being the last band to headline at The Bayou.

(Prarit's note: A quick note on the 30 million pound figure being
tossed around for that Millenium party in Dublin...)

Condensed from The Irish Times:

Of course, not everybody has the inclination or
indeed the budget to live the high life and do new
year the room service way. Most towns and cities
around the country are planning their own
celebrations and there are a number of different
organisations that have been set up to co-ordinate
millennium plans, including both capital, on-going
projects and one-off celebrations. Since late
November, we have officially had our own Peter
Mandelson, hard at work on millennium hoo-ha.
Seamus Brennan TD is "Minister for the
Millennium" and has a committee and a budget of
30 million at his disposal. Not just any old
committee though; along with a raft of people from
business, the media and so on there is a fair
scattering of "names" such as singer Ronan
Keating, writer Deirdre Purcell and Paul
 McGuinness, the manager of U2.

Before everybody gets very excited thinking of
these people sitting around planning a 30 million
party for the night in question it should be said that
the vast majority of the budget will be going on
long-lasting projects - monuments, buildings and
the like. The committee will be seeking the public's
ideas for worthy millennium projects early this year.

IMHO, surprisingly, U2's "Sweetest Thing" was voted as #20
in the Much Music Top Videos of 1998.

   Boyzone and U2'S Millennium Get-Together

World Entertainment News Network
02-JAN-99

(JAN. 2) WENN/P - BOYZONE AND U2'S MILLENNIUM GET-
TOGETHER Irish music legends U2 and BOYZONE are being
tipped to top the bill at a millennium spectacular in Dublin next
New Year's Eve (31DEC99).

The POINT THEATRE has been booked for a huge concert,
which will also be broadcast live on TV.

Tickets for the charity bash of a lifetime will cost $2,400
(=9C1,500) each, with all proceeds going to the Childline
children's charity.

Boyzone singer RONAN KEATING is already on a government
committee organising the millennium party plans, fuelling
speculation that he may also co-host the end-of-the-century
bash.

Boyzone and U2 have become close pals since the teen
idols guested in the veteran rockers' SWEETEST THING
video earlier this year (98). Both BONO and Ronan have
been talking about the two groups getting together.

Excerpt taken from a radio interview with Wim Wenders:

"Hopefully everything goes well with the science fiction film
The Billion Dollar Hotel with Bono doing the soundtrack
completely, and also appearing in it, not in a leading role
but a smaller part"

Thanks to Sanjay Ghandi for this info...

The January 1999 issue of Q magazine has a pretty good
review of 1998 by Bono in it...

(Prarit's note: U2 is RUMOURED to perform.)

Condensed from Irish Independent:

World to watch Dublin Millennium spectacular

By STEPHEN O'BRIEN

SOME OF the biggest names in Irish music, entertainment and sport over the
past century will be honoured in a spectacular End of Millennium stage show to
be broadcast live from Dublin's Point Theatre on New Year's Eve 1999.

The 1,500-a-ticket event will be shown live by RTE and a string of television
networks across the globe as part of an ambitious international broadcasting
plan to follow the striking of the midnight hour in the Year 2000 through all
the world's different time zones.

The list of performers at The RTE/MCD/Point spectacular is being kept tightly
guarded although speculation will focus on the likes of U2, Boyzone,
Riverdance and The Chieftains among the highlights of Irish music and
entertainment in recent decades. A cross-section of international stars will
be drafted in to present the awards to the various Irish winners, broadening
the appeal of the event and adding superstar weight to the bill.

>From JamTV:

(Prarit's note: I'm not accusing JamTV of mis-representing them-
selves or anything, but this "interview" excerpt seems eerily
similar to the Rolling Stone double issue interview with FatBoy
Slim last month. I guess it's just me...)

Everyone and their sister wants you to remix their songs. Who have
you turned down?

Do you want the whole list? It's more than a hundred for this year. But half
the time the track is already brilliant and I'd just fuck it up. Notable
turndowns were Madonna, Paula Abdul, U2, Aerosmith. I thought that was
particularly amusing. I'm assuming they've never heard of me. Someone at the
label was probably, "Get Fatboy, he's cool." Let's see . . . oh, yes, Meat
Loaf. He wanted me to co-write and produce a whole album with him. Can you
believe it?

   Propaganda Statement

Stop Press November 1998

Dear Propaganda Reader

As this latest bumper issue of Propaganda hits the presses - late as
ever, our apologies - it was announced that lsland Records are
releasing a 'Best Of' U2 album. While our new issue records the
final days of the successful PopM'art Tour, the band are suddenly
right back in the news with a hit album and hit single in Sweetest
Thing.

The new album is something lsland have wanted to do for a long
time and only just managed to put on the release schedule. U2
The Best of 1980-1990 contains 14 tracks and will be followed
by U2 The Best of 1990-2000, set for future release.

In case you weren't first in the queue to snap up the first volume
on the day of rielease, the track listing is:<snip>

Sweetest Thing was originally intended for inclusion on The
Joshua Tree but only a rough version made it to the b-side of
Where The Streets Have No Name. Steve Lillywhite, who
produced the band's first three albums, went back into the
studio earlier in the autumn and completed a new recording
of the song.

Readers who entered the Propaganda U2 Fantasy Album
(Of Your Dreams) last year wil[ note that not one of the hundreds
of entries came anywhere close to predicting the final line-up...
but then it wasn't very fair as none of us knew that the 'Best Of'
would come out in decade by decade instalments.

Still, now we do - so why not have a crack at anticipating the
running order for the 1990-2000 CD and save the band some
time. Write to us at Propaganda Mailbag, PO Box 5406, London
W7 1ZU.

The next issue of Propaganda will be out in early 1999, with early
news on the band's progress in the studio towards their next all-new
release. Meanwhile, plans are also underway to release a second
highly desirable Propaganda-only U2 CD release, following the
success of Melon a couple of years back. We hope to offer the
exclusive CD with Propaganda next year -but only to paid up
subscribers.

See you in '99 Martin Wroe, Editor

>From The Sleaze:

U2 star LARRY MULLEN is celebrating the arrival of an early Christmas
present - a bouncing baby girl. The superstar drummer's wife ANNE
ACHESON, 34, gave birth to the little one in a Dublin hospital on
December 23rd. The reclusive couple, who live in Dublin, already have
one son - AARON ELVIS. A pal says, "They are both thrilled with their
baby daughter and relieved that everything went okay. She is the perfect
Christmas present for them." U2 singer BONO and is wife ALI have two
children, while guitar ace THE EDGE has three by his estranged wife
AISLINN and a toddler by his new partner MORLEIGH STEINBERG.

 From CNN:

Talking on Corners Helps Corrs to Top Chart

(DEC. 27) WENN/P - TALKING ON CORNERS HELPS CORRS
TO TOP CHART THE CORRS have ended 1998 on a triumphant
note by becoming the biggest-selling album artists of the year.

Their LP TALK ON CORNERS grabbed the number one spot in
the 1998 album chart thanks to hits like SO YOUNG, DREAMS
and WHAT CAN I DO TO MAKE YOU LOVE ME.

ROBBIE WILLIAMS had to satisfy himself with second place for
this debut album LIFE THRU A LENS - and ninth place for his
latest LP I'VE BEEN EXPECTING YOU - while GEORGE
MICHAEL came third with his greatest hits compilation LADIES
AND GENTLEMEN.

THE VERVE's 1997 album URBAN HYMNS was still selling
strongly throughout the year to give them fourth position.
BOYZONE's WHERE WE BELONG came in fifth, followed by
CELINE DION's LET'S TALK ABOUT LOVE, ALL SAINTS'
eponymously titled debut and the TITANIC soundtrack.

U2's greatest hits THE BEST OF 1980-90 was also a hit, scraping
into the list at number 10. (WNV/VC)

Thanks to Zack for the following:

I bought Metallica's Cunning Stunts DVD, when it was finally released
last week. This is a live performance of Metallica, taped especially for
DVD format (multiple angles and lots of extra behind the scenes
footage), that was recorded on May 9-10, 1997 at Ft.Worth Texas.
While viewing the extra behind the scenes footage, I noticed that
someone passes a "newspaper type" of magazine called "Guide", to Lars
(drummer), and on the cover is a full sized picture of Bono (with extra
short hair) on the PopMart stage. I'm not sure if this is a daily
newspaper in Ft.Worth, or some type of tabloid.

(Happy New Year Zack!)
