Just some feedback on U2's NY eve plans at the turn of the millennium:

You're probably right--I doubt very much that U2 themselves know what
they're going to do come next New Year's eve! And that U2-in-LA rumor
seems to have been fueled by some concert promoters who seem to be
promoting a big concert in California that none of us in California seem
to know about.... :P

Next up on the subject:

Ever the skeptic, I think people need to take a deeeeep breath and not
freak out over this. The original article I read (the one deseree had
posted to the list) said U2 were "tipped to top" the bill at the Point.
In other words, it's all rumor and blind speculation--there's no
confirmation yet from U2's office as to whether they'll be appearing at
the concert. I've seen U2 "tipped to top" a lot of concerts and charity
gigs and festivals, to use a bit of the deathless prose in that article,
and guess what? It didn't happen.

And even if they did, so what? Look, I love the boys dearly, and I've
flown far afield to see a _U2_ concert, _including_ their shows at the
Point in 1989, but frankly, they're not worth $2,500! Not even for a
full-length concert, and the Point show being rumor-mongered here sounds
like another one of those charity events where numerous celebs and
Important Public Figures show up for a few minutes here or there. Would I
travel that far, pay that much, for what? Three or four U2 songs?
Sorry, boys--you're not worth it.

On the other hand, if the ticket price entitled me to chain the boys to my
bed and, uh, have them wash my dishes (that's it!), I'd reconsider. Hey,
I'm negotiable! ;-)

And what if all the Y2K computer-bug fears prove true, and all the
computers running the gear on stage crash and shut down the whole show?
Sure, I'd laugh myself silly, but then, I could do that for _free_! :D

Seriously, before we all start to run in circles and start booking
flights, making non-refundable travel plans, etc., I'd suggest waiting for
(1) official confirmation, and (2) seeing if you even have a snowball's
chance in hell of getting a ticket (assuming you can afford $2,400+ for a
ticket in the first place).

This is an important consideration--the Point is _not_ a big hall; it has
a _general_ capacity of less than 10,000! I imagine for some high-ticket
New Year's gala, it will be fully seated, and probably won't hold more
than 4-5,000, at best. Even if U2 were to perform, and Propaganda were to
get an allotment of tickets, I doubt that they'd have enough to offer them
to fans outside of Ireland!

Hate to be the wet blanket (again) about all of this, but at the Point
shows in '89, there were a _lot_ of fans who made the trip without
tickets, and never had a hope of getting in, even if they were willing to
pay 100 punts and up for tickets. I'd hate to see more fans spend the
time and money and come away broke and very disappointed!

Wait for some sort of _official_ word from U2 themselves before making
your plans...

P.S. I mean, for $2,500, I could go to Europe for a few _weeks_ and see
several U2 shows, the next time they play Europe. Or go down to
Australia, or Japan! Go ahead, call me a cheap bitch, but while I love
the idea of being able to travel and see U2 concerts, I want to get the
maximum bang for my buck!
