Somebody asked my if I was excited about the "Best Of" album. I told them
I wasn't really. I mean I have all but two of the songs. It is nice to
have all those B-sides in one place. On the other hand, part of the charm
of the B-sides was that, being separate and not on an album, they are
played so much less. It used to be a treat. I still won't play luminous
times, as it reminds me of being in love with my best friend's sister,
winter 1988. I figure if I hardly play it at all, I'll still be able to
evoke that feeling when I'm sixty. Ah, love.

On sa more analystical note - I was just wondering who likes the old
version of "Sweetest Thing" better. I prefer the old one. While the new
one is more carefully recorded, and has a better bridge, I feel it is
over-produced. Bono has less passion (and glories less in that feeling of
joyful loss, of losing what you love, but daring to feel anyway). The edge
sounds like he's practising for the verse of "Please" in the background. I
would describe his style as "thoughtful" - he is exploring, but this might
not be the time for it. I mean, He is looking into new ways of playing,
but maybe he should have done what was best for the song...?

When I hear the old version, I can feel this woman slipping away, but I can
feel the singer's mixture of joy and pain, all confused, mixed up, and yet
glad to be feeling something. I don't know... if it ain't broke....

It is, however, so great to hear it on the radio. Its number three here in
Montreal.
