A year ago today, a friend of mine, and many of us on wire, was tragically
killed due to someone's selfishness and greed. Many of us were shocked to
hear of this news for we had just hung out with Patrick Perez at a U2 fan
celebration in L.A. and had met up with him at the Seattle Popmart show. His
funeral brought a group of U2 fans/wirelings together that have remained close
friends throughout the anniversary of his sad death. Whether he knows it or
not, through him at the gatherings in Seattle and Popmart, he helped bring a
closenit group of people together. People were magnatized to him by his sweet
smile, friendly disposition, and recognizable laugh.
This year has been hard on me. When I hear songs like "One tree hill" or "if
god will send his angels," it immediately envokes a flush of memories.
However, there are also times I honestly can feel him or sense him around me.
When I saw REM at the TFC, his 2nd fave band, I just could sense a warmth
around me. This has helped me during some tough times this year to know I have
a friend "out there" i can talk to. Patrick, you may be gone from the
physical world, but you have not been forgotten. You will be with me to hear
that new U2 album and at every show (even the ones I cant afford to go to like
the 2000 show). Thanks for being such a great part of my life and bringing a
group of people together that all still love you very much.
While it is unfortunate that through other's passing, we are reminded just
how fragile life is. It helps me realize that there is no room for hatred
because life is indeed so precious. Though I know we cannot always be
consciously aware that every moment could be the last, perhaps acknowledging
that possibility will help us strengthen our relationships with others so as
to live with less regret.
And as we get ready to meet new wirelings and awesome people on the next tour
to come....remember how cool it is that we have this medium to meet one
another and treasure and deepen the friendships you make with others as you
follow those 4 irishmen around.
