"and crap is not measured in sales,"

he offers and gives us that look that means something
scared is about to come out, something brave: "or
even relevance...it's about the sense of adventure".
and he clinches it, again, while The Song plays in
the background, a sad tune, piercing as always. it's
the consideration that he gives those words that hurt.
or even relevance, the sound of defeat--or acceptance.
or even relevance, the 38 year old taming the boy.
or even relevance, a willful forgetting of the zipper
splitting open in mid-song. i did this so i could look
like you!! so i could look like you!!!

and before that we have the edge almost pouting because
he has been asked to be truthful in only a few words but
also because it's a question that has only one sort of
answer for him, and he cannot be the humble guy we might
be begging for. each member brings everything to the
table in the end. and that's a lot....dammit!

and even before that it's adam holding his fag as only
a lifetime smoker can, in a most uncool manner that exudes
coolness, and triumphantly telling us the reason we love
them so much: sometimes it's still possible to keep the
rest of the world out. i want that.

and, finally, larry who doesn't want it to end. more than
twenty years, and he still doesn't know how to hide, the fly
and macphisto sailing right over his head as he looks into the
camera and rips out his guts. "it's bigger than all of us....
i never want that to finish." well, bless you, my friend, shall
it never come to pass.

they chose "with or without you" to end the program, just
like the rockline interview people, just like everything and
everybody else, because there is a grandness to that song that
is inescapable no matter how "alternative" you are. you always
remember your first. that's a quote.
