Howdy Ho Wire!
The lyrics which you mentioned were kind of corny, but I think on the whole
POP isn't as lyrically bad as you seem to believe. Bono's writing shines
on If God Will Send His Angels(Jesus never let me down you know Jesus used
to show me the score/then they put Jesus in show business now it's hard to
get in the door), MoFo(mother am i still your son, you know I've waited so
long to hear you say so/mother you left and made me someone/now I'm still a
child but no one tells me no), and Staring At The Sun(there's an insect in
your ear if you scratch it won't disappear/it's gonna itch and burn and
sting/do you want to see what the scratching brings) just to name a few. I
do agree with you that the writing on POP doesn't stand out the way it does
on the rest of U2's work.
oh and by the way, the Winnipeg Jets became the Phoenix Coyotes a few years
ago, and a few years before that the Quebec Nordiques became the Colorado
Avalanche.
