Inroduction and books

Hello people,

as a new subscriber I just thought I'd introduce myself quickly.

I am a swedish guy that has been a passionate fan since 1988 (10 years,
wow...) when I was forced to listen to the "Rattle an Hum" album in my
friends car. I bought that one first, then "The Joshua Tree" and then
all the rest... haven't been able to stop listening since.

I can't say if I like the 80's U2 or the 90's better. I just think they
complement eachother nicely. I have only seen them live once,
unfortunately, in Stockholm 1993 on the Zooropa Tour. This was honestly
an intensely disapointing experience, mainly because the soundsystem was
so overdriven and distorted that you couldn't make out anything much
else except the bass-drum. It got better during the B-stage part, but
still not good. Anyone else that was there?
I missed the PopMart tour, because I was in Thailand (and still am)
during the whole thing, and could not travel easily. I was planning to
see it in Singapore, but they cancelled that one. For good reasons,
because the gentle state of Singapore has a lot of nice laws concerning
events like this, like NO touching the audience, NO entrance from the
back of the stadium. Could you imagine U2 giving in for those
restrictions?

Anyway I have been reading the WIRE digest now for more than a year, and
finally thought it would be time to post and get involved in some flame
wars :-) You seem like an interesting bunch of people.

So, about U2 books, I have seen a lot of book recommendations and
requests for book recommendations here, but so far I have not seen
anybody mention "U2 - A Conspiracy of Hope". This is written by Dave
Bowler and Bryan Dray and is in my opinion the second best U2 book, the
best being Flanagans.

It does not exactly cover "events" in the biographical sense, but more
ideas, interpretations and the feelings that the songs evoke. It is very
well written - the authors have understood the core of U2 very well and
have been able to articulate it in an intelligent way. This is for
people that believe that rockmusic is just as much of an artform as
anything else. Highly recommended.

Has anyone else here read it?

Thats all for now

Yours Truly

//Stefan
