U2, Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson Set For Johnny Cash Tribute Concert
The musical worlds of rock and country will come together to honor the "Man
in Black" Johnny Cash, as U2, Bruce Springsteen and Willie Nelson have all
agreed to appear at a special concert set for April 6 at the Hammerstein
Ballroom in New York City.
Other artists slated to perform songs from Cash's 40-yaer career include
Lyle Lovett, Trisha Yearwood and Cash's own daughter, Roseanne. Organizers
are also planning to name more acts to the evening's line-up in the next few
weeks.
The show is being sponsored by cable channel TNT as the second installment
in its "Master Series," and the network plans to tape the concert for
broadcast later in April as "An All-Star Tribute to Johnny Cash." TNT held a
similar tribute for composer Burt Bacharach last April that featured the
likes of Ben Folds Five, Elvis Costello and Chrissie Hynde paying homage to
the famous songwriter.
Cash, who is only the second man to be inducted into both the Country and
Rock and Roll Hall of Fames, has enjoyed a career revitalization over the
last few years, dating back to his guest appearance on U2's "Zooropa" album
in 1992.
Since then, Cash has been embraced by such rock musicians as Glenn Danzig,
Chris Cornell and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, all of whom have
contributed to Cash's last two albums, 1994's "American Recordings" and
1996's "Unchained."
