I dont know if it has anything to do with it but U2 themselves are REM fans.
I think this can sway the more easily influenced members of the U2
appreciation society. I know that in the past i have been moved to buy a
record by another artist if my fave artists recomended them.
By strange co-incidence (or not as the case may be as the support bands are
generally chosen by the main band) i first saw REM supporting U2 at the
longest day gig in Milton Keynes '85. They have just matured into a
different kind of sound than U2 but neither band sound anything like they
did that summer day.
This is just one opinion.
