(slight snip)

Several sources, including the U.K. music
site, have reported U2's next release coming
in June, 1999. At this point, it is unclear
as to whether this release date is simply
wrong, for the next "Best Of" collection or
for U2's next studio album.

Like most long-time U2 fans, I highly doubt
the June, 1999 release of U2's next studio
album. At the earliest, I can envision U2 releasing
a new album around November of this year. This
would allow the album to benefit from the holiday
sales and hype. Plus, U2 would have new
material just in time for any Y2K tours (including
any 1999/2000 New Year's Eve performances).
I would then predict that U2 would release
their "Best Of" second set in late 2000 or
after.

If U2 actually come out with a June, 1999
release of any material, I would be surprised.
I think it's a bit too soon to release another
"Best Of" album, considering how well the
first "Best Of" is selling (and it's lasting power
on some charts) at present. I would also be
stunned if U2 actually finished a new album
by June.

With that in mind, if this Rushdie written U2
song is to be released along with his book, U2
might simply release it as a separate single.
Bono has been quoted in the past as saying how
he'd love to release a song between albums that
is not associated with any U2 album. But to date,
U2 haven't really done that very often. Admittedly, U2
or U2 members have performed on various soundtracks or
charity albums, but rarely is there a brand new U2 song
not associated with any album released between albums.
Therefore, it's possible that the Rushdie song might be one of
these type of releases. The song might also be associated
with the "Entropy" soundtrack.

However, if the Rushdie song is associated with an U2 album,
then I too would predict it to be with the release of U2's
second "Best Of" set.

Ciao,

John
