The song was 'Walk Unafraid,' which appears on the band's most
recent album, 'Up.'
I never read the original article where Michael Stipe talked about
Bono's help, so this is a third-hand paraphrase:
"I was having trouble with this song. I wasn't sure to how to say
what I wanted to. Bono said 'Why not turn it into a question?' "
Anyway, I hope that's pretty accurate. (I haven't figured out how
the lyrics are in the form of a question).

And, as for U2/R.E.M. fans, I'm actually an R.E.M./U2 fan who
collects more U2 stuff just because there seems to be more of it. :) I
got into U2 after hearing 'Until the End of the World' on the movie
soundtrack. That made me pick up Achtung Baby, which led to the Joshua
Tree . . . oh, and my local radio station played Stay every morning
between 9 and 10, so I'd tune in just for that. :)
