Rushdie, a former advertising copywriter, was for years forced into
hiding after the contents of his book 'Satanic Verses', so outraged
Iran's religious leaders, that a contract on his life was offered to the
world's Moslem community. The 'price on his head' was around 2
million pounds and caused massive media attention, throughout the
world, at the time. The, so-called, 'Fatwa' resulted in Rushdie's virtual
imprisonment, under the government's protection, at constantly
changing addresses, from which he was only released at the end of
last year when the Iranians lifted the contract.

U2 are also involved in a, Johnny Cash, tribute concert, next April,
at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom, which also features Bruce
Springsteen, Lyle Lovett, Roseanne Cash, Trisha Yearwood and
Willie Nelson. 67 year old Cash has been ill for some time with
'Shy Drager Syndrome', which is similar to 'Parkinson's Disease'

>From Q magazine:

U2 And Rushdie's Common Ground

Depending on your music and literary tastes it's either a
marriage made in Heaven or Hell. U2 and Salman Rushdie
have collaborated on a song. The Ground Beneath Her Feet
takes its lyrics from Rushdie's new novel of the same name
which sets the tale of Orpheus in the Underworld in a rock 'n'
roll environment. According to Rushdie "Bono and I have
been friends for several years (Rushdie appeared on stage
with U2 in 1993) and I sent him the novel when I'd finished
it, and he responded by coming up with this beautiful melody.
Simple as that, but of course very pleasurable." It is unclear
what will become of the track though there is talk of it being
released on the internet to coincide with the novel's
publication .

I Saved U2 from Obscurity: Friend

(JAN. 21) WENN/P - I SAVED U2 FROM OBSCURITY:
FRIEND From WENN correspondent RUPERT CORRY in London
Irish rockers U2 nearly wasted their days away as a PETER
FRAMPTON tribute band until a close friend stepped in with
some good advice.

REGGIE MANUEL has been friends with BONO and THE EDGE
since school and now runs their label KITCHEN RECORDS. And he
thinks he shaped their character by lending them records he borrowed
from his older brother.

He says, "Peter Frampton are what spring to mind as being prime
in their repertoire - I figure if Edge or Bono could be someone it
would be Frampton.

"I don't want to take too much credit for it but I imagine I was
responsible for creating Bono as he is now.

"Another one of the early ones that helped Bono create his style
was MACARTHUR PARK by RICHARD HARRIS - that used to
have him in tears. That basically shaped his character for U2."

Howie B. Dips Into Porn

British breakbeat revivalist Howie B., along with a
slew of artists on his Pussyfoot recording label,
will be dipping their talents into the porn industry
in April.

That's when Palm Pictures will release Suck It and
See, a double-CD compilation featuring "sonic
interpretations of the word 'pornography' and its
connotations," in America (the set surfaced in England
last July). But unlike the British version, a
sexually- charged, borderline pornographic DVD,
directed and produced by underground film gurus Jakob
and Roman Pander and featuring music from the album,
will be released simultaneously. Both sets hit stores
on April 27.

Suck It and See features one track credited to Howie
B. himself ("Only If It Hurts") as well as 18
additional tracks by such artists as Daddylonglegs,
Naked Funk, and Fantastic Plastic Machine, in which
Howie B. had a hand as well. The long-form DVD
(which, for all you perverts out there, does contain
graphic depictions of sexual intercourse) is an erotic
film set to music.

The Pander Bros. are well-known in the underground
film world, having won the Best Experimental Film
award for The Operation at the New York Underground
Film Festival in 1995.

Here is the complete track listing for Suck It and See:

CD 1

1. "Love Thong," Love T.K.O.

    Clermont Lounge)
6. "Green Door," Fantastic Plastic Machine

Judgement Day

Will Lisa Loeb get to stay on her major label when the dust settles?

Universal, Polygram labels awash in pink slips as merger moves
forward

It's the beginning of the end for approximately 500 workers and
hundreds of artists associated with the newly merged record giant,
the Universal Music Group. Owned by the Seagram Co., Universal
recently took control of international music powerhouse Polygram,
which Seagram purchased last spring for $10.4 billion. As part of
the unprecedented merger, fifteen affected record companies,
including such familiar names as A&M, Geffen, Mercury, Motown
and Island, are being drastically downsized and consolidated into
four major label groups. The result is a sea of pink slips (the 500
expected this week are the first of an estimated 3,000 layoffs
worldwide) aimed at label staffers from sales, marketing, publicity,
A&R, publishing and every other department.

Artists are also on the firing line. Although many won't be notified
for weeks to come, in recent months Universal executives have
been poring over their label rosters, determined to keep only
essential acts. And while obvious stars such as Sting, Sheryl
Crow, U2, Hanson, Beck, Bon Jovi and Hole aren't going
anywhere, dozens of others are anxiously awaiting word. Sources
close to labels suggest acts once considered borderline, such as Tonic,
Monster Magnet, Patty Griffin, Remy Zero and PJ Harvey, appear to
have made the cut. However, according to sources, those still facing
an uphill battle to retain their major label status include some critically
acclaimed acts who've struggled commercially, such as Del Amitri,
Lisa Loeb, Weezer, Tracy Bonham, Tripping Daisy, Steve Poltz,
Roni Size and Orbit, among others.

There also seems to be an awful lot of artist jockeying going on
between labels behind closed doors. Almost as soon as the
blockbuster merger was announced, U2 made a dash from its longtime
home at Island to Universal's Interscope Records. That got Sting to
thinking about leaving A&M for another label within the Universal
family. Why? Because according to his manager Miles Copeland, A&M,
which will be just a shadow of its former self once the consolidation is
completed, "no longer exists -- period." No decision has yet been made
as to who will release Sting's new album, due this spring. meanwhile,
Boyz II Men and 98 Degrees, two of Motown's biggest acts, have
bolted for Universal Records. And sources report fellow Motown
artists Diana Ross, Queen Latifah and Brian McKnight all want to
leave the shrinking label and find a new home within Universal.

And then there's the uncertainty swirling around Def Jam Records.
As part of the master consolidation plan, Universal was set to purchase
the forty percent of the legendary rap label it didn't already own, and
was willing to pay Def Jam founder Russell Simmons approximately
$70 million for the remaining stake. But sources say he's demanding
$100 million, which, if true, is an extraordinary amount, considering
that when Simmons sold sixty percent of the label back in 1993, the
sale price was $33 million. Annoyed Universal execs are balking. Part
of the problem may be that if Simmons agreed to sell the rest of Def Jam,
Universal bosses have made it clear the rap impresario would have
virtually no role in running the company he helped build. Meanwhile,
Universal was hoping to tap Def Jam's No. 2 executive, Lyor Cohen, t
o run Universal Records. But with the Def Jam deal on ice, Cohen's not
going anywhere.

In other words, the headaches may just be beginning. Or, as one
surviving Universal executive put it, "I'll be happy if I never live to
see another label merger."

Springsteen, U2 to honor Johnny Cash

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Bruce Springsteen, U2 and Willie
Nelson are among the musicians lined up to perform at ``An
All-Star Tribute to Johnny Cash'' in April, the event's organizer
announced Thursday.

Turner Broadcasting's TNT cable network said it would tape
the show at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom on April 6
and screen it later that month.

Cash, who has not sung or performed since revealing in
October 1997 that he was suffering from a degenerative
brain disorder, will attend the event, said his manager, Lou
Robin. However, it is not yet clear if he will perform.

Other entertainers confirmed so far are Cash's daughter,
Roseanne Cash, Emmylou Harris, Kris Kristofferson and
Lyle Lovett. Trisha Yearwood is the sole representative from
the new generation of country artists who have pushed the
likes of Cash and Nelson out of the commercial limelight.

Cash, who will turn 67 on Feb. 26, is currently spending the
winter at his Jamaica home, Robin said, and taking medication
to control his health problems. Cash is suffering from Shy-
Drager Syndrome, a form of Parkinson's Disease.

Known as the ``Man in Black'' on account of his funereal stage
garb, Cash has influenced several generations of music fans
since releasing his first single, ``Cry, Cry, Cry,'' in 1955.

Among his many awards are nine Grammys, the most recent
won last year when his latest release, ``Unchained,'' beat out
several big sellers to grab the prize for best country album.

Axe Falls Early At Universal/Polygram Labels

Artist rosters and label staffing to be decimated at such labels
as Geffen and Mercury.

Staff Writer Chris Nelson reports:

Universal Music Group, the largest of the world's five
major music corporations, plans to lay off 500 staffers
Thursday (Jan. 21), launching a significant reshuffling that
will leave another 2,500 without jobs and hundreds of
bands without record deals by the end of summer.

While the bulk of pink slips are expected to be issued
Thursday morning, a high-level source at one affected
label said cutbacks already had begun Wednesday
(Jan. 20).

"Staffing issues are happening as we speak," the source,
who preferrred anyonymity, said Wednesday afternoon.

The layoffs are one of the first steps to integrate PolyGram
and Universal, following the $10.4 billion acquisition of
PolyGram by Universal's parent company, Seagram, in
December. Under a massive restructuring plan, such well-
known labels as Interscope, Geffen, Def Jam, Motown and
Island will be fused into four new labels.

Amid the reshuffling, some of the world's most famous
bands may wind up on new labels. U2, for instance, are
said to be leaving Island Records, their longtime home, to
sign on with another Universal Music Group division, the
new Interscope-Geffen-A&M, or IGA, group.

U2 manager Paul McGuinness would not explicitly confirm
that the Irish band, whose recent hits have included
"Discotheque" (RealAudio excerpt), are jumping to Interscope.
But asked if the band anticipated having to adjust to working
with new label staff, McGuinness said, "Not really. Interscope is
being headed by Jimmy Iovine, who is a very old and good
friend of ours." (Iovine produced several U2 albums.)

The biggest acts at the combined labels, such as rockers
Hole and Marilyn Manson and country superstar Shania
Twain, aren't likely to be significantly affected, but the future
of some lesser-known bands is unknown.

U2, Springsteen Sign On For Johnny Cash Tribute Show

New York show to be taped April for cable-TV special in honor
of country legend.

Staff Writer Chris Nelson reports:

Some of the biggest names in pop and country music, including
U2 and Bruce Springsteen, will gather in New York April 6 to
salute legendary country singer/songwriter Johnny Cash with a
night of song and celebration.

Among other musicians scheduled to honor the "Man in Black"
at an all-star performance at the Hammerstein Ballroom are country
stars Willie Nelson, Trisha Yearwood, Lyle Lovett, Kris Kristofferson,
Emmylou Harris and Rosanne Cash -- Johnny Cash's daughter.

Cable channel TNT will tape the performances for airing in April
on the "TNT Masters Series."

"He's thrilled," Cash's manager, Lou Robin, said Wednesday (Jan. 20).
"He's a very modest person, and he was just overwhelmed by the fact
that these folks would want to do this."

Robin was unsure whether Cash, who has been battling illness over
the past year, will perform. "That depends on how he feels," Robin
said.

Cash, who turns 67 next month, suffers from Shy Drager Syndrome,
a disorder that causes fluctuations in blood pressure and impairs his
speech and vision. He has been in and out of the hospital for weeks
at a time. "[Doctors] are trying to regulate the medication they're
giving him," Robin said. "He's out and around; he just hasn't been
performing."

Cash is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Country Music Hall
of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame -- he is the only musician
inducted into all three.

He first made his mark with the primal singles "Folsom Prison Blues"
and "I Walk the Line" on Sun Records in 1956. He was part of the
famed Sun Records stable of artists that also included blues- and
country-influenced rockers Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee
Lewis.

He's remained a vital creative force ever since, and he's influenced
and worked with several generations of musicians.

He sang with folk-rocker Bob Dylan on Dylan's 1969 Nashville
Skyline and appeared on U2's Zooropa (1993). He recorded Bruce
Springsteen songs in the '80s, and in 1996 covered hip-hop/folkie
Beck's "Rowboat" and grunge band Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage"
(RealAudio excerpt of Cash's version) for his Unchained album
(RealAudio excerpt of title track), on which he was backed by Tom
Petty and the Heartbreakers.

"It's time to publicly acknowledge Johnny Cash's contributions to
American music and culture," said Jeb Brien, Executive Producer
of the TNT special. The special will be the second installment in
TNT's "Masters Series." The first, which debuted last April, was
"Burt Bacharach: One Amazing Night." It featured rock singer/
songwriters Sheryl Crow, Elvis Costello and others paying tribute
to 1960s songwriter Bacharach.

U2, Bruce Springsteen Slated For Johnny Cash TV Special

The TNT Masters Series, which the cable network launched
last year with the Burt Bacharach: One Amazing Night concert,
is gearing up to pay tribute to country outlaw Johnny Cash.

An All-Star Tribute to Johnny Cash is set to tape at New York's
Hammerstein Ballroom on April 6, and will air on TNT later that
month. U2, Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, and Lyle Lovett
are all among the artists scheduled to perform at the event.

Kris Kristofferson, Emmylou Harris, Rosanne Cash, and Trisha
Yearwood have also signed on to pay tribute to the nine-time
Grammy winner, who is in the elite company of Elvis Presley
as one of only two performers to be in both the Country Music
and Rock and Roll Halls of Fame.

More artists are expected to join the tribute lineup in the coming
weeks.

U2, Bruce Springsteen and Willie Nelson have all agreed to
appear at a special concert set for April 6 at the Hammerstein

evening's line-up in the next few weeks.

The show is being sponsored by cable channel TNT as the second
installment in its "Master Series," and the network plans to tape
the concert for broadcast later in April as "An All-Star Tribute to
Johnny Cash." TNT held a similar tribute for composer Burt
Bacharach last April that featured the likes of Ben Folds Five,
Elvis Costello and Chrissie Hynde paying homage to the famous
songwriter.

Cash, who is only the second man to be inducted into both the
Country and Rock and Roll Hall of Fames, has enjoyed a career
revitalization over the last few years, dating back to his guest
appearance on U2's "Zooropa" album in 1992.

Since then, Cash has been embraced by such rock musicians as
Glenn Danzig, Chris Cornell and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers,

Paul Wellstone, a Democratic Senator from MInnesota who
recently toyed with the idea of running for President but
decided not to because of back surgery, is slated to give speech
today on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King.

His speech begins with lyrics from Pride (In The Name of Love),
and for that reason, I am forwarding his speech to the list. Enjoy
and say a prayer...

Prepared Remarks of
Senator Paul Wellstone
On Martin Luther King Day
January 18, 1999
It was just over three decades ago, when

"Early morning, April 4,
"A shot [rang] out in the Memphis sky"

that took from us the man who came

"In the name of love." 1/

Today, we honor the memory of the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. when we
honor that in which he believed. We keep faith today with our fallen hero
when we honor that for which he fought.

We honor him today when we speak of freedom, when we speak of justice, and
when we speak of love. We venerate him today when we fight violence, when
we fight war, and when we fight intolerance. We revere him when we
continue to dream.

And today, three decades after his death, we honor Martin Luther King when
we speak of that for which he fought in the last years of his life. We
venerate him when we continue as he did to speak of economic justice, when
we continue as he did to fight poverty.
