cut and paste jobs in live version of "Bad"

Bad is defnitely about addiction as that is how Bono introduces it in
most concerts during the 80s.

My question now would be about the snippets Bono does insert in Bad.
Is it just because they hinge on the same chords or are musically nice
to put? Or do the lyrics have some special connection with Bad?

I mean what's the point in saying "goodbye ruby tuesday" when then
next thing you say is "i'm please to meet you"? Or how about the
Candle In The wind and crawled out of the woodwork portion in ZOO TV
Bad that goes to "The First Time"?

I just don't understand what these snippets mean but my hunch is that
they just sound right and have the same chords so why not just sing it
to add variety.

Cheers,

J
