Irish fans please enlighten me! PER St. Patrick's day U.S. vs Eire customs

I heard that the Irish (vs Americans) wear a shamrock, or symbol of one, rather than just simply
wearing the color green somewhere on their person. I remember being a kid in America and wearing
green on St. Patrick's day otherwise we'd get pinched. And then there were the sneaky kids who would
wear the tiniest amount of green so that you'd mistakenly pinch them and they'd self righteously
anounce that they had green on all along. Is this just an American thing? And whether or not it is,
how did this custom originate?
I will be in Ireland on around St. Pat's day.
  Thanks. : ) Shary
