Wire brethren,

Well, this post may qualify me for Wire Smart-Ass of the Day, but I
can't be sure because I can't get into the reflector site to see if
anyone else responded to the post to which I am replying. Regardless,
here it is.
Yesterday, April wrote: "I do agree hearing lesser played songs
would be nice, but I think that ONE, WTSHNN, ISHFWILF, and WOWY will
ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS be played. Anyone wanna challenge that?" Well,
April, the trouble with making such a statement on a list with a lot of
knowledgeable U2 fans (some, like myself for the time being, with
surplus free time on their hands) is that someone from the 4000
(approx.) subscribers might catch you in an error. There is one in your
statement, and here it is.
If you get out your "ZooTV - Live from Sydney" video and look at the
track listing, you will find that ISHFWILF is NOT there! Obviously, that
is because they didn't play it. (Yes, they don't have every song they
played at the show on the video tape, but the one song they cut was
"Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World", not ISHFWILF.) If you
research further, I am pretty sure you will find that a large portion of
the ZooTV stadium shows (after the release of "Zooropa") did not include
this song in the playlist. Yes, I was stunned by the omission too,
because I thought that song was immune from playlist exclusion as well
(it's my favorite single from JT).
One of the very few tragedies of having one of your favorite groups
last for so long is that some of your favorite songs WILL get the chop
eventually (they, regrettably, can't play them all). In fact, from the
list of 4 songs you claimed would be in the set-lists for as long as
they tour, the only one I'm convinced they will absolutely have to
include in their next tour(s) is ONE (this, of course, is my humble
opinion, so, "Joshua Tree" fetishists, calm the hell down - I may be
(and I desperately hope I am) proven wrong). Hey, I'm still wobbly from
the fact that I had to wait 10 YEARS to hear "I Will Follow" again live,
so ANYTHING is possible when it comes to set-lists! :)
Just to conclude and prove my point definitively, I leave you wiht a
list of songs that grizzled U2 veterans like myself couldn't have
imagined would not be played on every date of every future tour:

I Will Follow, The Electric Co., Gloria, Sunday Bloody Sunday (band
version), Two Hearts Beat As One, "40", well...you get the idea.

Even the most valued of songs can be omitted. This band is committed
to musical evolution; therefore, the set-lists will change and personal
favorite songs will be left out. I hate and regret it as much as you,
but that's the way it is. Have a nice day! :)

David Way
