U2 on tour: why even HAVE a set list?

Hi wireland...

I think this is a great thread--personally, I'd like to see U2 become a
little less conservative on their next tour, play arenas again, and vary
the show from night to night. I love how bands like Phish, Grateful Dead,
and many others tour/toured without a real agenda, and would play new sets
of songs each night. I think it makes each show more unique, and more
surprising. I mean, how boring was it to log on to WIRE during the
Popmart tour, anxious to see what the previous night's concert was, and
find out, that sure enough, the same twenty songs were there? How great
would it be to go to a U2 show and hear them launch into Dirty Day,
followed by Do You Feel Loved, which could segue into Scarlet, which would
then lead into an extended jam, out of which would emerge Streets?

I understand that U2 would counter this point by saying, well, there are
technical limitations when you're playing stadiums, and that screen
images, sequencers, etc. have to be pre-set. THat's understandable, I
suppose, and I know that U2 shows have always been more like Broadway
presentations than improptu rock shows, but still... I don't think it
would be too hard to mix it up a little more.

Anyway, on the next tour, whenever that may be, how about a core base of
these 14 songs, plus 7 from the new album, with the band reserving the
right to change the show every night:

1. Electric Co.
2. The Unforgettable Fire
3. Mofo
4. Do You Feel Loved
5. Tryin' to Throw Your Arms Around the World
6. So Cruel
7. Zooropa
8. Lemon
9. Stay (Faraway, So Close!)
10. Where the Streets Have No Name
11. Last Night on Earth
12. Hawkmoon 269
13. Sweetest Thing
14. One

...and from the new album:

15. Ground Beneath Her Feet
16. Hymn to the Universe
17. Super City Mania
18. Nosejob
19. Cradle to Cross
20. Ecstasy
21. Your Waterfall Cathedrals

(and no, I have no idea if the last songs will be on the album--they're
just names of rumored U2 songs that I've seen on the net! :)

I'd also like to hear "Shadows and Tall Trees," "Babyface," "Acrobat," and
"Wire" (of course! :)

And, as has been mentioned by others, U2 could indeed come onstage and
play "Happy Birthday" for 2 hours every night and it'd still be great!
This post is just a daydream, not a complaint...

cheers
Tim
