why even HAVE a set list? (Edge bashing - sort of)

I wouldn't really attribute the setlist limitations in Popmart to the
fact that there were technological limitations. The band could easily
pull off and old song and have the screen show close-ups in different
colors or split screens and that sort of live footage. The images as
the tour progressed were different per song. Discotheque ocassionally
had an extended jam and the same thing with WOWY. Bono said in an
interview that he wanted all the fans to get the same show, maybe to
be fair to all of them, so everyone gets the same show and setlist.
But if you'd ask me, I'd say that's a twisted interpretation of
fairness.

All the previous tours seemed to follow a certian setlist. U2 only
alters stuff in impromptu shows, such as in the Save The Yuppuie show
where they played songs that weren't on the JT setlist, the YES
soncert where they played cover songs they never played, and even in
the Late Late show where they did a brand new arangement of AIWIY and
a live North and South of the River. That is because U2 prepare and
rehearse fo rthis special shows.

Touring wise, U2 only has a certain set of rehearsed songs and that is
what they will play the entire tour. Edge doesn't have a 10 gig
memory on his head. When he took Party Girl out of the closet in an
impromptu performance in ZOO TV, he forgot the solo. When Bono first
did an impromptu perfomance of Bad in Barcelona, Edge messed up his
guitars. Alan Carter's book "Outside Is America" said that at the
start of the UF tour (was it Australia or New Zealand anyway...), Edge
actually had to buy U2's old records to relearn the guitar parts
because he forgot since he was allegedly too immersed to the UF
recording sessions! That totally amazed me at how he could forget
when at that time, U2's repertoire of songs wasn't much at all and
that they were a touring band, meaning they play live all the time.

So if any of you want U2 to pull an old favorite of yours out of the
closet, ask Edge...

Cheers,

J
