Chris, I asked Bono about these two adlibs, very specifically, when
he allowed me to interview him for my U2 fanzine - exactly 6 years
and 9 days ago <g>, in Tempe, Arizona. And he said neither of those
were snatches of other songs - they were things he just made up one
night while performing each song. The conversation went like this:
ME: The extra verses that you do live, "Do you hear me coming Lord,
do you hear me call?" (from One) do those just come to you while
you're playing, or is it another song I'm not recognizing?
BONO: Usually the improvisations, like in the end of "One," one night
they fall out of the sky and then I remember them and I repeat them.
ME: I love those. They're the most fun because you don't get them on
the record. The one in WOWY: "Yeah we'll shine like stars in the
summer night..." is that another song, or is that from you?
BONO: I can't remember, that one changes, it does. (pauses) No, I
think it came out one night. 'Cause usually it's a moment and then
it's just a memory of that moment and every time I sing it I remember
the moment that made me sing it the first time. So I guess I'm
trying to . . . (he searches for a word)
ME: Recreate?
BONO: Yeah.
Hope that's helpful Chris. (Also, in WOWY on some versions he goes
all the from the "Yeah we'll shine part" into a part that goes "and
love, love will tear us apart again; love, love will tear us apart
again." *That* is indeed a snippet of another tune. It's a Joy
Division song, called (imagine this!) "Love Will Tear Us Apart." :-
