u2 at top of rock music sales??? Why Alanis blows!

While I sat bracing myself for the inevitable loss that U2 will suffer
to the pretentious windbag (Alanis) in next weeks charts, I found
myself thinking about sales numbers for all rock/alternative acts that
have been around for a few years.

In the last 2-3 years there has not been a group in this category that
hasn't suffered in sales numbers (that I can think of).

a short list of "highly anticipated albums" that failed on the charts
after having at least one successful album:

Marilyn Manson
Dave Matthews Band
Garbage
Depeche Mode
The Cure
REM
Pearl Jam
Hole
Live
and the list goes on and on....

Most of these bands have good first week (or so) numbers because of an
established fan base. But they quickly slide off the charts. Can
anyone think of a band that has defied this trend since 1995-96??

Now that I look back on it, even with the horrible press that U2 got,
and the bad marketing of the album and singles, U2 sold more copies of
POP than any of the above bands, with the exception of Dave Matthews
(who received massive amounts of positive press) who has sold a little
over 2 million.

I am hoping that this will remain true for Alanis since I despise her
so much. But in reality she is now played much more on pop radio than
rock/alternative. So it will be a little different. I still believe
that her numbers will fall well below 50% of what Jagged Little Pill
sold (~16 million in the US).

Hey I have a question for Alanis, if you don't like fame and fortune
than why are you on the covers of Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly,
etc... and are doing loads of tv specials???

Isn't she ironic - or is that moronic?

feedback is very welcome

nian
