numbers game

Okay -- can someone please explain to me what is so freakin' important about
what _number_ is on your "limited edition" U2 GH cd???

That's one.

And here's two:

So Polygram have released a second batch of 'limited edition" cds to stores
in the US. And that is supposed to suck, according to one person, to be a
blatant ploy to make more money according to a couple other people, and to
be illegal according to one _other_ person.

Why?

Call me ignorant, but I don't get it.

I mean, this is a Greatest Hits package, not a brand new CD full of original
songs. What is so shocking about wanting to make money off of _that_? Oh
sure, even I argued that it was a good thing for those fans who were new to
U2 and didn't have the money to come up for their complete back catalogue,
and so forth, but I also know that Greatest Hits releases are mainly put out
to make some extra cash. That's fine with me -- it's not as if U2 had said
the CD would consist of "all original versions sung in Latvian with Larry on
fluegelhorn!" and then released the regular songs. Everyone who buys the CD
knows what he/she is getting.

But apparently _some_ elitism has to be squeezed out of this situation, and
getting upset over the fact that there will be _more_ "limited edition" cds
available, so that more of the less-fervent U2 fans, who didn't wait up all
night in cold weather in front of Tower Records or whatever can now have
_their_ B-sides too. Or perhaps I am wrong and you (those of you who are
upset) are miffed that you got all excited about getting your hands on the
CD before it ran out, only to hear that there would have been ample
opportunities to lay your hands on a copy. To that I say look at it this
way: at least you got some excitement over U2, which is usually hard to come
by when they are in between tours and album releases.

But I still don't understand the numbers thing.
