RE: it's not like them, but now it is

All the moaning & gnashing of teeth on all the U2 lists over this greatest
hits album is getting on my nerves. Why is everyone getting their panties
in a wad over this greatest hits album thing? Do you have something
against U2 making a wise business decision, racking up a little spare
change, nabbing a few new fans, maybe slipping free of a bad situation
w/their record company...?

Why so much speculative doubt as to U2's motives, artistic integrity
(whatever the hell that is), and future as a creative force? Have a little
faith for cripe's sake. If anyone can do something spectacular w/the
greatest hits format, U2 can. And if they don't, so what...don't buy it.
The worst thing that can happen is that your favorite song doesn't make the
cut, & you already own it anyway, right? Is "One"'s presence on a
so-called "greatest hits" album really going to blunt its impact as a song?
Does that suddenly make the music's "message" invalid, & now Bono, Edge,
Adam, & Larry are just another quartet of morally void rock stars who were
really only in it for the money after all? Or are you just loathe to share
your precious U2 with "those people"---you know, the ones who actually buy
greatest hits albums.

And stop whining "but Bono *said* they'd never..." How many times have you
turned around & done something you said you'd *never* do? And you know
Bono's got a big mouth, so cut him a little slack. He's probably got a
good reason for agreeing to do something he always said he'd "never", but
even if he doesn't, it just proves what everyone should have known all
long, he's human, his words should not be engraved on stone tablets, he
puts his pants on one leg at a time just like....wait a minute, I guess we
knew that already from, you know, *those* pictures (gratuituous butt
reference).

PS-Mike Messenger, I like your theory.

"All my writing has always been for laughs or fun or whatever you call it.
I do it for that first. Whatever people make of it afterwards is valid but
it doesn't necessarily have to correspond to my thoughts about it. OK?
This goes for any books, creations, art, poetry, songs, etc. The mystery
and shit that is built around all forms of art needs smashing, anyway."
John Lennon
