Mix it or Nix it.....

Well, I did my part last night for U2. Here in Toronto, on Mix 99.9 they
had what is called "Mix it or Nix it"...they take two new songs and then
listeners call in and vote on the best one. The one that wins is then
challenged the next day (or at some other time, I don't know if it is daily)
by another new song. So, Alannis Morrisette's new release "Thank-you" was
challenged by none other than U2's "Sweetest Thing 98"....I was SO
excited!!!!

Needless to say, I voted at least 20 times (where were you people, fellow
wirelings?)....what were the results? Well, there's good news and there's
bad news. The good news, the great news, is that U2 won. The bad news is
that they won at only 53% of the votes!!!! While I take a certain pride
that I possibly helped them squeak out this win, it sobered me to this fact:
U2 just won't ever be big again. I don't say this to get flamed....let's
look at the facts. Pop was a great album - not my favorite, but it was
praised by many serious music critics. The public, however, was relatively
uninterested - I repeat - RELATIVELY uninterested. It was still a big
seller as far as any band is concerned. Yes, their concert drew a lot of
people, but, let's face it: that does not make them an "in" band. I mean,
KISS also had one of the biggest tours of all time as well. And I think we
all agree they are by no means cutting edge.

Anyway, I love U2 and although I want them to be number 1, I will love them
no less for not being as popular as they have been.
