>From Cybersleaze:

JOHNNY CASH AILING AS HE FIGHTS PNEUMONIA: Ailing
country star JOHNNY CASH is in the hospital after being hit with a
bad bout of pneumonia. The 65-year-old, who has been dogged with
health problems for more than a year, is being treated for the
potentially fatal condition in Nashville's Baptist Hospital in
Tennessee. Wife JUNE CARTER CASH is keeping a bedside
vigil, trying to keep the singer's spirits up. Spokesman LOU ROBIN
says, "He isn't in intensive care as some newspapers have reported
but we have been concerned. Johnny was diagnosed with pneumonia
about a week ago but we are hoping he will have made enough of a
recovery to be released over the weekend." Cash is expected to follow
doctor's orders and rest for several weeks before attempting to go back
into the studio. The RING OF FIRE hitmaker is also stricken with a
nervous
disorder which impairs his speech and he suffers from breathing
difficulties. Last year here were fears for his life when he was
airlifted to
the Baptist Hospital with congestive heart failure.

>From Oli G:

There will be 3 formats:

The cassette will be backed with Stories For Boys
(Live from Boston, 1981) CD1 contains Twilight (live from Red
Rocks, 1983) and An Cat Dubh (live from Red Rocks, 1983)
CD2 contains Stories For Boys (live from Boston, 1981) and Out Of
Control (live from Boston, 1981)

The release date is still October 19. I assume that the release date
and the formats are only confirmed for the UK & Europe.

I also have the Sweetest Thing 1-track promo CD, and here's
a description of the sleeve (I'm not sure if this has been posted
before...)

The front side has the image from the "War" sleeve, but the boy is
wearing a big fat gas mask. Across the whole image, it says:
U2 SWEETEST THING (U2 in white, Sweetest Thing in gold, the
image is b/w).

The background of the back side is gold. It says "Sweetest Thing
3:00" in white, and below are the credits in black. This promo CD
doesn't have a catalog number.

Rumour, from a subscriber:

I have a friend in the radio business, and he had a conversation with
some folk at polygram and they told him that the new album will not be
called Drive. They've also finished mixing a song called "From The
Cradle To The Cross"

>From SonicNet.com:

U2 B-Sides Collection Charts Experimental Sounds
First version of Irish rock band's upcoming greatest-hits LP
includes limited-edition CD of rare flip-sides.

Senior Writer Gil Kaufman reports:

Irish superstars U2 may be knee-deep in plans to release three
greatest-hits compilations, as well as beginning talks about their
next big move musically, but that doesn't mean they have forgotten
their lesser-known, more-experimental past.

The first of three upcoming "best-of" collections from the politically
conscious rock pioneers will chart the band's career from its early
'80s beginnings in earnest post-punk to its late '80s dabbling in
American roots music. Meanwhile, a B-sides collection, set to
accompany a limited number of the initial releases, is scheduled to
chronicle the band's more adventurous, albeit less popular, musical
ideas.

An untitled, 15-song anthology of rarities, the B-sides album will
feature a wide range of previously available material taken from the
flip sides of U2 singles. Included are the group's sensual cover of
punk-poet Patti Smith's "Dancing Barefoot" as well as its takes on
such pop hits as the Righteous Brothers' "Unchained Melody" and
the 1974 smash "Everlasting Love."

"Once the B-sides album is gone, it's gone," said John Vlautin,
spokesman for the band's Island Records label. "It won't be offered
again."

The full track-listing for the B-sides album -- which will be bundled
with the "greatest-hits" package U2: The Best of 1980-1990, due in
stores Nov. 3

(Prarit's note: <SNIP>)

"The B-sides collection will only be available for a limited time,
until the stores run out of them," Vlautin explained. The specially
priced, two-CD set will be priced "slightly higher" than the single-
disc "best-of" CD, which will hit stores Nov. 10.

Since their formation in Dublin, Ireland, in the late '70s, U2 have
sold an estimated 83 million albums and earned their status as
one of the premier rock bands in the world.

U2: The Best of 1980-1990 and the B-sides collection cover a
landmark decade for the quartet, which includes singer Bono, guitarist
the Edge, drummer Larry Mullen Jr. and bassist Adam Clayton.

The full track-listing for U2: The Best of 1980-1990 is:

(Prarit's note: <SNIP>)

The previously unfinished B-side "Sweetest Thing" will be released
as a single. Originally intended for inclusion on 1987's 15 million-
selling American folk/gospel-influenced album The Joshua Tree,
the song was left unfinished and later appeared as the flip side to
the hit single "Where the Streets Have No Name."

U2 recently returned to the studio with the producer of The
Joshua Tree, Steve Lillywhite, to complete work on "Sweetest
Thing." On Sunday, the group teamed with video director Kevin
Godley ("Even Better Than the Real Thing") to shoot a video for
"Sweetest Thing" in Dublin.

"I'm not sure what the story is," said Louise Butterly of the
group's European publicity firm, "but [Irish pop group] Boyzone
are in the video, along with an elephant, 20 River Dancers and the
Artane Boys Band."

The latter group, according to Butterly, once counted a teen-age
Mullen Jr. among its members.

Butterly said it was too premature to comment on whether on a
recent meeting between U2 and producers Brian Eno and Daniel
Lanois to discuss plans for a new album would result in another
collaboration.

"We've heard that [the band] did meet with [Eno and Lanois], but
it's too early to tell if they will work together," Butterly said.

Eno and Lanois have collaborated with U2 on some of their most
commercially successful, multi-platinum albums, including 1984's
The Unforgettable Fire, 1987's The Joshua Tree and 1991's
Achtung Baby.
------------
Another "C-side" rumour for "The Sweetest Thing":

"An Cat Dubh" and "I fall down" from Red Rocks, June 5, 1983).
