Ali Claims Royalties For 'The Sweetest Thing'

 By Dan McGinn

>From The Independant Online

WRITING a song, staging a carnival through the centre of Dublin
and saying sorry in front of U2's fans was not enough for Ali
Hewson, it emerged today. The Dublin band's lead singer Bono has
revealed U2 is also giving over the rights to its forthcoming single
`The Sweetest Thing' to Ali Hewson's favourite charity - the Children
of Chernobyl.

Royalties for the song, which was written by Bono by way of an
apology to his wife Ali for missing her birthday because of recording
commitments, will go to the Cork-based charity which brings children
from the nuclear contaminated city to stay with Irish families.

A video for `The Sweetest Thing' was shot in the centre of Dublin on
Sunday in brilliant Indian summer sunshine with Bono and the band
staging a carnival through the centre of the city in front of Kevin
Godley's cameras.

And speaking to RTE television from the shoot against the backdrop
of a street banner bearing the incription `I'm So Sorry,' Bono revealed
to reporters Ali insisted when he wrote the song for her that the
royalties
should go to the charity headed by former Irish Presidential candidate
and close friend, Adi Roche.

But he also revealed U2 exacted its own price in return.

"Well we insisted if the song is written for her and the royalties
are going to the charity of her choice which is the Children of
Chernobyl, then she better appear in the video."

Taking part in the U2 carnival were Dublin boy band Boyzone,
Riverdance star Jean Butler, former world champion boxer Steve
Collins, acclaimed Galway street troupe Macnas (resurrecting the U2
figures that appeared on the Zooropa tour), a circus elephant and the
Artane Boys marching Band.

The video for The Sweetest Thing will be aired on Irish television
within the next fortnight.

produces original stories for ZooNation.

Bonos' wife the leading lady

By AIDEEN SHEEHAN

THE Chippendales, an elephant, Bono and Boyzone anyone who
wandered through Fitzwilliam Square yesterday afternoon found
a little more than they were looking for.

U2 brought along a star-studded cast to film the video of their
new single Sweetest Thing in optimal weather conditions in
central Dublin.

The old B-side, to be released next month, was a treat for Bono's
wife Ali Hewson who apparently asked her husband to get her
Boyzone and ``star me in a movie'' for her birthday.

Ali was leading lady in the video, seated with her husband in a
horse-drawn carriage followed by Boyzone and the rest of U2.

Jean Butler and the Riverdance crew provided the dancing moves,
joined by boxer Steve Collins and the Chippendales on stilts
dressed up as firemen, while an out-of-place elephant contributed
further to the carnival atmosphere.

Rumour(not yet confirmed) about "The Sweetest Thing" single:

1) Two "C-sides" :) -- two separate live versions of "The Sweetest
Thing". The first is from Red Rocks(June 5, 1983) and a JT version
from Boston(I've checked through a couple of books and cannot
seem to find the date that this was played during the JT tour IN
Boston).

2) The cover will be of Peter Rowan(the "Boy").

Again, both of the above should be taken as rumour...

Thanks to Derek McAllister for the following:

>From The (Dublin/Irish?) Star:

by Jason O'Callaghan

Irish supergroups U2 and Boyzone were back in their hometown
yesterdayto shoot the video for a single they recorded together.

The sweetest thing was written by Bono for his wife Ali over a
decade ago when it appeared as a B side. But the song has now
been completly re worked with guest vocals from top boy band
Boyzone.

Yesterday the millionaire musicians brought parts of Dublin to a
stand still as they performed in front of the camera's and strolled
around meeting fans and signing autographs.

A host of celebrity pals also turned out for the event, including
boxing champion Steve Collins, members of Riverdance, the
Artane Boys band ( Larry started drumming with the Parade
boys band ) and strippers the Celtic Knights.

In the video Bono rides in the back of a horse drawn carraige
down Fitzwilliam Place as the rest of the band travel alongside him
in a open top 70's Mercedes. Boyzone can be seen running up to
the carraige shouting and singing to Bono, who casually waves
back. As the video continues, U2's manager Paul McGuiness
makes a short appearance driving behind in a rickshaw.

When McGuinness moves on , former boxing champion steve
Collins runs up and jumps on to bono's carraige , drying him down
with a towel.

Next a massive re fire engine pulls out along side Bonos carraige
with the male strippers in tow, as they move away the singer is
surrounded by Irish dancers from Riverdance.

Continueing on down the road, the band are joined by a truck
load of classical musicians who join in on the chorus.

The final scene sees U2 being joined by an elephant, trapeze
artists, and fire workers.

Yesterday tourists were shocked at how close they could get
to the pop mega stars.

U2 nad boyzone sauntered around witout any obvious security
for the two and a half hour shoot.

the Sweetest thing will be released on October 19th and it will be
followed up with U2's first ever greatest hits album, which goes
on sale on November 2nd.

Sandra Bullock(amongst others) had supper with Bono and Ali
at the Clarence on Saturday night...

Make of this what you will -- I have no way of confirming the
following:

The reason that Ali is the carriage in the video for "The Sweetest
Thing" is that it was a birthday gift from Bono to her -- she gets
to be the star of the video!

(Prarit's note: I hope it's true -- pretty cool birthday gift...)

First off, I know that the Zooropean hasn't had one of the best
net-reps in the past few years.

                                            B U T....

I would like to say that I think that the "new" Zooropean is far
different than the Zooropean from about two years ago. It's
better organized, better staffed and IMHO, Sander and Chuck
put out a hell of a good product.

They have official merchandise, etc., on the site -- it's really
worth taking a look at...

Check it out for yourselves:
