Wow! I'd like to know if there's anyone still on the list who's been
here longer than 5 years! Anyway, good thread.

I joined up just before Christmas 1995. So it's been almost 3 years.
What I liked best about joining WIRE then was the realisation that I'm
not alone as a fan. Back before this list, I think I knew 2 other
people who came even remotely close to caring about U2 the way I do.
But the list was totally different back then from how it is now. There
was more of a "community atmosphere," and most people were forced to at
least scroll past every post since you couldn't get reflector unless
you'd joined in the dark ages (like Aaron -- LOL). So people couldn't
selectively read as much (sometimes when I post these days I don't feel
like anybody reads it). However, on the down side, there wasn't much to
talk about, and the list seemed to be pretty sharply divided between a
few "U2 gods" who knew and had everything and the rest of us
supplicants. Contrary to popular belief, just as much time was spent
discussing how tall Bono is and whining about flame wars as getting into
deep, meaningful discussions of the band. The world of online fans was
just as much divided in those days, IMHO, as it is now, except everyone
stuck to one list because there weren't enough people to secede.

These days, I stick by WIRE because of the diversity of fans here as
well as the fact that it's a great source of info, especially during
tour-time. I am glad that you have to be subscribed to post. And I am
always happy to see people like Modsavage who love to share, making this
a better place for all (even tho his questions boggle me). My main
complaints have to do with the online fan base at large and not this
list per se.

So, that wasn't really organised, but there you go.
