Well, I'm not rob, but I thought I'd take a swing at this one...

No, I think you're right on this one. "The Joshua Tree" is one of the few
albums that has had no editing/remixing done to any of the tracks, aside
from that "radio edit" of "Streets".

There was also a cassette-only, alternate version of "An Cat Dubh", which
was reportedly one of those freebies that are taped to the cover of some
British pop music magazines (can't swear which one it was). I've never
seen this, and have only heard a few references to it from British
collectors. Anyone know if this one really exists, or is it simply the
album version?

Of course, there's the alternate take of--"Stories for Boys", is it?--on
the "Just for Kicks" compilation.

Also, Bono and Adam re-recorded "Tomorrow" for the "Common Ground" CD, but
that was years later...do you have a time-frame for this stuff? :)

But was that an _official_ release, or a bootleg? I've got most of the
official releases, and can't say I've ever seen a legit release of "The
Unforgettable Fire" as an instrumental...

Plus, while we're hanging around the UF era, the Aussie version of the UF
_EP_ has alternate versions of "Love Comes Tumbling" and "A Sort of
Homecoming" (live). And the 45 RPM version of "Boomerang I" plays OK on
both 33 1/3 and 45 RPM, though whether that's _deliberate_ or not depends
on your degree of paranoia and/or attitudes towards Brian Eno. ;-)

Plus the "Dub Mix" of "Wire", released on a 7" by NME. Actually, a very
tasty remix, too!

Maybe they had their shit all together? Maybe they ran out of time?
(Note how long it took them to do a final take of "Sweetest Thing"!)
Maybe the stuff on the "Joshua Tree" just doesn't lend itself to remixing?
Also, even though the band have had a history of releasing various
"alternative" versions of songs, as well as live stuff, they weren't doing
all that many _remixes_. The number of songs that were truly remixed
could be counted on the fingers of one hand...let's see, "Wire", "Two
Hearts", "New Year's Day", uh....sure, there were different takes,
different edits, live tracks, etc., but not much serious remixing. They
only seem to have really begun to get into remixes with some of the
"Rattle & Hum" songs, and the rest is history and 476 versions of "Lemon"!
