Tina Rhodes' 12/17 posting

I am writing to WIRE tonight in response to Tina Rhodes' posting on
December 17. While there were a few scattered comments on the Iraq
"crisis", not a single post was as outrageous and arrogant as hers.

It is quite obvious Tina, that you have little understanding of the
way nations and countries interact with each other. Allow me to
explain a little about the way our world works:

There are two types of nations:

-Those that manufacture chemical and biological weapons for use on
innocent people, supress and kill ethnic minorites, burn other
countries flags, beat up on tiny states that can't defend themselves
and enjoy being led by an insane dictator who is bent on conquering
the world.

-And nations that try and keep the other type under control

The United States and the United Kingdom are both countires that
(while not perfect) do have some belief in concepts of freedom,
equality and democracy. To dismiss this recent attack, and the Gulf
War, as a "war crime" is something one would expect from a whining,
complaining washed-out 60's radical.

Let me make this VERY CLEAR:

The United States and the United Nations have been negotiating with
Iraq for over six years, trying to avoid an incident like this one.
Only now, after Saddam Hussein threw peaceful UN weapon inspectors out
his anthrax plants, have the responsible nations been pushed to use
force. And that is because the only thing Saddam Hussein understands
is force. He must not be allowed to go about plotting the destruction
of peace unchecked.

While my heart does go out to the people of Iraq who are suffering for
their maniac leader's insanity, you must acknowledge the fact that the
attacks against Iraq are necessary, even if they will kill innocent
victims. Trust me, there were people like you, Tina, who said that the
United States should not go to war with Nazi Germany because innocent
people would be hurt if we did. It should be very obvious that MANY
more individuals would have died if we had not attacked the Third
Reich. While we are in a less extreme position in 1998, the same
prinicples apply. THE RESPECTABLE NATIONS OF EARTH MUST NOT ALLOW
SADDAM HUSSEIN TO BECOME MORE POWERFUL.

I hope I don't sound too much like Attila the Hun because I really
don't believe that the United States always uses it's power correctly.
I couldn't agree more with Bono in "Bullet The Blue Sky" about U.S.
intervention in Central America, but frankly Saddam Hussein is not
Daniel Ortega. Actually I would compare Hussein to another former
Latin American leader: Pinochet.

Thanks for reading my speech,
Intergalactic Bono

PS- The song that followed "Unchained Melody" during Zoo TV was "Until
The End Of The World", not "Bullet The Blue Sky". And please don't
claim that the concert you attended was different because I know for a
fact that "Bullet" was never played following "Unchained Melody".
