No need to speculate; there haven't been any new nominations to Exit for a
while now. If anyone was sent an "invite", they're having their chain
yanked...

Touche!

And why all the endless posturing and pissing and moaning about there
being a "closed" U2-fan mailing list? This is hardly a novel concept on
the Internet, and even Wire isn't as wide-open and "egaliatarian" as some
would like to think--you have to be a subscriber to post, and are limited
to three posts per day. Lists that are somehow "closed" or have a
restricted or invitation-only policy are a lot more common that you might
think, and can be found covering topics from organic gardening to current
events in Northern Ireland.

If someone wants a total free-fire zone for U2-fan related postings, stick
to the usenet news groups. In fact, as I understand it (having come
on-line late in 1993), Wire was created to provide an _alternative_ to the
flame-wars and spamminess of the news groups, and I do recall seeing Wire
being attacked as being "elitist" for having done so! Enjoy the irony...
Meanwhile, Wire now has that subscriber-only restriction on postings, a
quota of three posts per day (and I think that both of these rules have
helped improve the content of the list), and 17 (count 'em), *17*
rules/suggestions/guidelines about how, when, and what to post.

Also, if a "closed" list is such a horrible thing, then I guess that the
U2 World Service, aka Propaganda, is the most wretched U2-fan thingie in
the universe. You have to...brace yourself, now...pay *money* to join!
Evil, elitist bastards! And to make it worse, they've been known to
offer...deep breath now...*tickets* to fans who are snobbish enough to
have actually joined the fan club. Oh, the horror, the humanity! When
will it end?

Come to think of it, they don't even have a real Web site. Evil, evil,
evil elitist bastards! :D

(ROTFLMAO, etc.)

Face it, the Internet is a big, big place, and people are fully entitled
to create lists that best serve their needs and purposes. This doesn't
make anyone snobbish or elitist, it just means that they're using their
right to create something that works for _them_. Attacking other people
because they don't all join your choice of club or list isn't going to
change this fact.

Touche, again! :)
