hi WIRE-world,

todays Irish Times Features has an interesting article about one mans
view of Ireland after returning to it after 20 years away. his name is
Michael O'Loughlin and at one point he says he came to Dublin in the
80s to make a U2 documentary and gave up after 24 hours!

The whole article is at
http://www.irish-times.com/irish-times/paper/1999/0126/fea1.html
and is worth reading, especially if you are one of those people with a
silly sentimental romanticised view of ol' Mother Ireland.

for those of you who can't be bothered heres the highlights:

"I had spent enough time in carefully detailed imitation Irish pubs in
various European capitals being
nostalgic for the authentic Irish pub. But in a classic case of life
imitating art, the average Irish city centre pub now looks like a
Budapest caf trying to imitate an Irish pub."

"I slowly began to realise I was going to have to treat Ireland like
just another foreign country."

"In the 1980s I came to Dublin to make a documentary about U2. I
wasn't a very dedicated documentalist, and I gave up after 24 hours. I
had to, because the people I interviewed, the usual talking heads,
simply refused to answer my questions."

"The media overkill surrounding pop bands such as U2 and Boyzone is
not just about the feel-good factor. I have nothing against them
personally ... But I do
object to being asked to take them seriously .... their chief interest
is purely commercial." (Note: I dont agree with him here! Maybe it was
best he never got to do that documentary!)

"James Joyce once wrote: We cannot change the country: let us change
the subject."

and so on with the other posts.....

zeek.
