'Angels' Descend on Pop Charts
During the Eighties we couldn't move for songs featuring the
word "fantasy," and the hoary old "hand/understand" rhyme
still crops up with chilling regularity. But as the millennium
bears down upon us, there's one lyrical clich that, after much
saber rattling, has begun to saturate the music landscape. The most
popular word in pop is "angel."

Despite it being a word with no obvious rhyme, it seems as
if every major artist has to give in and cut an "angel" song
sooner or later. The Eurythmics' "There Must Be An Angel,"
George Michael's "Cowboys and Angels" and U2's "Angel of
Harlem" spring most readily to mind, but everyone from
Madonna to J. Geils Band and from Mariah Carey to Great
White have contributed to the heavenly host. And though it
has always had its adherents, the outbreak of angelically-
inspired ditties seems to have reached epidemic proportions.

In Britain, Robbie Williams' lighter-waving smash,
"Angels," has only just dropped off the singles chart after more
than six months of airplay, even though another "Angel," by
Simply Red, had recently been a hit. But that's nothing. In the
U.S. there are currently no fewer than five seraphic songs
fluttering around the Hot 100: "I'm Your Angel" by R. Kelly
and Celine Dion; "Angel of Mine" by Monica; "Angel" by
Sarah McLachlan; "Fly (the Angel Song)" by the Wilkinsons
and "Angel in Disguise" by Brandy, each one a masterpiece
of metaphorical originality.

Next up? Maybe a rush of songs about being abducted by
aliens. Or perhaps a few about that other constant companion
of our age: the cell phone. Heaven only knows.

>From The Mirror:

EVAN KNOWS WHAT HAGUE WILL DO NEXT

EVER eager to ingratiate themselves, the faltering Tory
party have pulled their most desperate stroke yet - by
announcing that William Hague's wife Ffion Jenkins is
related to U2 guitarist The Edge.

Dave Evan, aka The Edge, moved from Wales to Ireland
when he was young. But exactly how he is related to
Ffion, no one seemed quite to know yesterday.

''They may be cousins," said a spokesman for Mrs
Hague. "But I don't know if they are immediate cousins
  or several times removed.''

Naturally, the Tories were quick to deny that they
disclosed the connection in a bid to boost the Hagues'
  profile and make them ''cool''.

The spokeswoman added: ''She is a professional woman
with her own life. It's not about image and profile and all
  that with Mrs Hague.''

Strangely, Ffion is not The Edge's only famous relative.

Actress Juliet Aubrey who starred in the recent movie
Still Crazy is also related to the star.

A spokeswoman for U2 said she was unaware of the
  link.

Random Notes

Lights, camera ... Bono. The Million Dollar Hotel, the Wim
Wenders-directed/Mel Gibson-starring film co-written and co-
produced by U2's renaissance frontman, is scheduled to begin
shooting Feb. 2 in Los Angeles, according to the film's production
office. Scripted by Bono, German director Wenders and writer
Nicholas Klein, the futuristic film will feature Gibson playing a
bald detective investigating the murder of a billionaire's son at
a flop house. Bono himself is slated for a role alongside
actress/model/singer Milla Jovovich and Jeremy Davies. Bono is
also credited for the music and screenplay, confirming speculation
last October that U2 would contribute to the soundtrack. Stay tuned
for further details as they develop . . .

All work and no play makes Bono a dull boy. That's why U2's
frontman took a break from recording the band's next album to
attend the opening of Johnny Depp's new Paris nightclub, Le Man
Ray, which the actor co-owns with Michael Keaton and Sean Penn.
While Depp didn't attend the festivities, his newly clean and sober
ex-girlfriend, Kate Moss, did. Also in the house, old school
rocker Mick Hucknall of Simply Red . . .

>From Yahoo! UK :

Ffion May Be Related To U2 Rock Star

A piece of upbeat news is in prospect for the Tories with the
disclosure that leader William Hague may be related by marriage
to a revered rock star.

Wife Ffion Jenkins is thought to be kin to U2 guitarist Dave
Evans, known to fans as The Edge. A spokeswoman for Mrs
Hague said: "I think they are related in some way. They may be
cousins, but I don't know if they are immediate cousins or
several times removed."

>From Record Collector:

(Thanks to Dave and Wendy for this article)

"Remember that story a couple of years back about leaked tracks from "Pop"
being available on the Internet long before the official release of the
album? I don't care what the official story was: the whole thing seemed all
rather convenient to me. This kind of thing seems to happen to U2 with an
alarming frequency. Remember the pre-"Achtung Baby" bootlegs? More
recently, "The Sweetest Thing" could be downloaded from the net long before
the official release date.

One thing's for sure. U2 have one of the largest and most active online
followings of any band. So this month's Web Watch devotes itself to
Ireland's biggest export earner outside of Guinness. As usual I started
with an initial search using Yahoo. This brought up a huge number of sites,
but one thing I've learnt is to trust a fan-produced links page, as these
are usually much more comprehensive. For U2, I recommend Dustin Hall's
U2Links (http://www.home.earthlink.net/~dustinhall) which has a total of
278 links. If it exists, then sure Dustin has it covered. If you want to
practise your foreign-language skills thereare links to U2 pages in a
variety of foreign languages, plus all the usual stuff such as cover bands,
guitar tab sites, bootleg sites. Dustin also includes links to text files
and has a page of links dedicated to U2-connected sites. Included among
these are sites for Brian Eno, photographer Anton Corbijn, Gavin Friday,
The Irish Times, Amnesty International and Greenpeace among others.

He even includes a link to the Why U2 Suck site. If I have one criticism of
U2Links, its that the site needs better organisation and more detailed
information about the contents of other sites. One thing I noticed about
the U2 sites, and what I could guess about a site from its title, is that
most of the work is being done by younger fans who don't seem to have
picked up on the group until the release of "The Joshua Tree". I often
think a band's early days are the most interesting. With regard to U2
sites, there doesn't seem to be the kind of detail you find on a Bowie or
Led Zeppelin site, for example. However, most of the sites I looked at
were lovingly put together.

In the absence of an official U2 site, I've picked out a handful of sites
which I thought stood out above the others. Highly recommended s the
excellent U2 Zone (http://www.vaxxine.com/U2/). It has a similar feel to
the David Bowie Teenage Wildlife site and its contents are of a similar
high standard. Its virtually a U2 encyclopaedia on the net. It contains
great stuff about the Pop Mart tour, MP3 files of U2 music and a host of
other goodies for the most ardent U2 fan. What I also found attractive
about the site was the simple and uncluttered layout, which is, in my book,
infinitely preferable to somebody showing off their HTML skills.

infinitely preferable to somebody showing off their HTML skills.

Another excellent site is Henry Wager's (sic) Zoo TV World
(http://www.henrywagner.org/zootv/). The site has superb design, which
doesn't get out of control. Like U2 Zone it features tons of info, up to
date news, photo and MIDI files sections. Also included is an excellent
"Interactive Discography" which allows you to check information about U2
releases in countries as diverse as Hungary and Mexico. CD, vinyl, promo
editions and flexidisc formats are among those included.

Other worthwhile sites include The U2 Page
(http://www.gironet.nl/home/firework/home_u2_e.htm), which includes a
section on hidden messages in U2 music; ZooNation
(http://www.zoonation.com/) which is very good for up to date news and
seems to have some sources close to the band; and finally Mark Grzymala's
*U2 Page (http://members.tripod.com/~grzymala/u2) is also worth checking
out. In reality, all these sites contain much the same contents, so its
really a matter of where your personal preferences lie.

U2 fans seem to be more than a little active in, ahem, bootleg trading on
the Internet. The best site for information about the hundreds of illicit
releases is For Love Or Money? (http://www.u2-flom.com/or
http://www.erols.com/breck/forlove/). I think I can answer that question.
If its a U2 boot you're talking about, then money is the answer. If its a
Television disc, the answer is love. Anyway, FLOM, as it seems to be known,
is actually one of the best sites concerning bootleg releases that I've
ever seen and certainly sets the standard for other sites of a similar ilk
to follow. The information contained is detailed, relatively entertaining
to read (t gets a bit trainspotter-ish in places) and provides essential
advice for the consumer. It is maintained in both HTML and text formats,
and is also available with releases listed alphabetically, by title, or
chronologically, by year of performance.

Also worth taking a look at is Sira Vista's excellent analysis of the
infamous "U2: Achtung Baby - The Working Tapes" bootlegs
(http://members.home.net/sira/actung/u2.htm). The On Line Guitar Archive's
legal problems concerning `abuse' of copyright material continue to have
wide-ranging ramifications throughout the Internet community. Most guitar
tab sites have now moved to countries in Central Europe, where controls are
more liberal. In the meantime, The U2 Guitar Archive
(http://cu.comp-unltd.com/~noneal/u2guitar.html) remains an excellent
source for U2 guitar tabs. Besides the more familiar titles, Nathan, who
runs the site, also includes some of the more obscure early U2 songs like
"False Prophet". If you've got a mate who wants to sing along while you
hammer out the guitar lines to 'Pride', but unfortunately he's a little too
drunk to remember the correct lyrics, then The U2 Lyrics Archive
(http;//www.interference.com/u2la) is there to help. Just a word of
warning. I was unable to connect, because the site had exceeded its
bandwidth for the month - whatever that means.

A couple of other sites of a factual nature which deserve a mention are the
U2 FAQ (www.u2faq.com or http://www9artholamew.
com/MailingLists/u2-list/faq or ) and the U2 Discography Site
(http://www9eocities.com/Tokyo/3474/u2.html). The former contains some
good stuff, but it's a bit too earnest for my liking. Still, you get the
answers to even the most stupid/basic of questions here. The latter site is
a superbly detailed and attractively presented discography. Besides the
plethora of international releases and pictures of the various sleeves,
etc., there's also a link to a gallery of U2 concert tickets.

I was hoping to be able to end with a little bit about the imaginatively
titled B Enchanted Laundry Hamper (I'm not making this up, honest) but
unfortunately the site was off line until after January. So instead I'll
leave you with a brief pointer to Why U2 Suck
(http://wwwmcs.net/~court/u2sucks.html). No, it's not the work of Clinton
Heylin, though it could have been. Before reading this page I'd heard
virtually identical arguments from Mr. Heylin. Instead the author is
Courtland Funke, and he gets a good few interesting points in.
Unfortunately, Courtland seems to be the recipient of a large amount of
hate mail from rabid U2 fans defending Bono's honour. Give it a whirl and
see what you think - and remember, U2 fans, variety is the spice of life."

January 26, 1999... From what we gather this one is about set
to start rolling. "The movie will be shot on February 2nd - 4th
from 6:00am to 6:00pm at 111 W. 5th Street, Los Angeles, CA.
Word among the U2 fan community is that Bono has merely a
walk-on role, nothing major. Oh well..." Any readers who have

>From The Irish Echo:

Salman writes the songs
By Eileen Murphy

People sometimes refer to Paul McGuinness as the fifth member of U2, but
the smart money's on writer Salman Rushdie. The author of "The Satanic
Verses," who has lived under the threat of assassination by Iranian
fundamentalists for the last decade, continues his long association with
U2 by penning lyrics to a new song which they will include on their next
album. Can't get much chummier than that.

Rushdie wrote the lyrics as part of his new book, "The Ground Beneath
her Feet."

"I sent [Bono] the novel when I'd finished it, and he responded by
coming up with this beautiful melody," the Guardian newspaper quoted
Rushdie as saying. "Simple as that, but of course very pleasurable."

In more U2 news, we hear that Bono and the lads must feel vindicated by
the recent Irish Supreme Court ruling that no planning permit is
necessary for concerts at Lansdowne Road. Those of you with long
memories will recall U2's court fight back in 1997, when they were in
danger of having to cancel the final concerts on their PopMart Tour.
Four area residents citing fear of noise, trash, vomit and general
inconvenience sued to prevent the concerts from taking place. U2
squeaked by, but 80,000 fans (and nervous promoters) were kept on
tenterhooks for, like, weeks.

And just in case you thought making an album was all work and no play,
we hear that Bono jetted off to gay Paree to attend the opening of Le
Man Ray, a new nightspot owned by actors Johnny Depp, Sean Penn and
Michael Keaton. The U2 frontman partied with the likes of newly rehabbed
supermodel Kate Moss and Simply Red singer Mick Hucknall. One can only
assume that the two guys bemoaned their failure to purchase their very
own football team (Glasgow Celtic) while Kate bemoaned the absence of
ex-boyfriend Depp (who skipped the party).

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/-- When country superstar

The 1998 tour had a higher average attendance than U2, the Rolling

U2 can dance

U2 have launched their own dance label, Kitchen Recordings, so Danny
O'Connor accepted their invitation to come into the parlour.

U2 are currently beginning work on the follow up to Pop, but as with any
global monster, they're keen to make sure we haven't forgotten about
them.

Handy, then, that they have an immense back catalogue that has only just
been plundered in the form of the current hit album, U2: the Best of
1980-1990. Any public relations expert will tell you that the art of
keeping with the present involves both revisiting the past to remind
everyone how significant you are and looking ahead to the future to hint
at how significant you can be.
