Hey all-

I had one of the most emotional experiences the other day. It does have
U2 content and I thought that some of you might get something out of it.
I'm sorry to those who might feel that I am taking up space about
something unrelated...

As of now, I am studying peace and conflict studies here in Derry,
Londonderry, whatever you wish to call it. I am staying as neutral as
possible on this whole Nationalists and Unionists issue here in Derry so
I have to include both names. Anyway Bloody Sunday was last weekend and
I have to say that it was unbelieveable. I am very passionate about
human rights and people who are treated unjustly (hence the peace and
conflict studies) and so I decided to attend the Bloody Sunday weekend
events to see what it was all about. The speakers were wonderful and the
stories I heard were emotionally draining. Funny how many of the
foreigners at the lectures were in tears whereas the natives weren't.
After talking to some of the people who actually marched on Bloody
Sunday in 1972 I quickly learned that it is easy to become numb to keep
you sanity. It is really a different experience being in Bogside walking
past the Free Derry Sign and the murals that tell the story of human
rights abuse. Anyway there was a big march on Sunday in which I decided
to march. It wasn't because I was supporting the nationalists, it was
because I believe that everyone has the right to live without fear of
being murdered. It was a moving experience and somehow Gerry Adams
started talking to me. I didn't have anything intelligent to say as I am
still very ignorant to the politics of Ireland. He was very nice to me
and offered me his water. I must have looked drained.

Anyway when I got home, I listen to Sunday Bloody Sunday and it had a
different effect on me. I always understood what Bono was singing about,
but after being in the middle of it for a few days, I can't tell you
guys how much that song means to me. I am at a loss for the right word
to describe it so I will leave it at WOW! Please listen to Sunday Bloody
Sunday and remember all of those who have died because of the troubles
here in Ireland.

rambling on about politics...
chrissy
